Series Notes
The Tigers, who were predicted to be the runaway favorites in the AL Central, have a record of 18-20 and sit four games behind the Cleveland Indians… The Pirates face Prince Fielder for the first time as a non-Brewer… Fielder is hitting .294 with 6 HR and 21 RBI, and has appeared in all 38 games for Detroit this season… Austin Jackson is listed as day-to-day with an abdominal strain… Jose Valverde could be back on Saturday or Sunday after missing time with back stiffness… Justin Verlander is 15-2 with a 2.94 ERA in Interleague Play… Charlie Morton is 1-2 with a 7.50 ERA in Interleague… A.J. Burnett is 4-2 with a 6.33 ERA in eight starts vs. the Tigers… Drew Smyly has just two non-quality starts this season… Max Scherzer has a 3.98 ERA in four career outings (three starts) against the Pirates… Kevin Correia is 5-5 with a 3.87 ERA over 86 innings in Interleague Play… The Tigers stole just 49 bases last season, which was the fewest by a team in one season since the 2008 Padres, who stole 36… They have swiped just 13 bags so far this year, which is second-worst in MLB… Miguel Cabrera has appeared in at least 150 games for eight consecutive seasons, and he has appeared in all 38 games so far… Pittsburgh native Don Kelly played seven different positions last year, including pitcher.

UPDATE:

The Pirates have recalled Gorkys Hernandez from Indy and sent Meek back down. Meek was with the Bucs for just two days, and gave up three runs in one inning of work on Wednesday night in DC. Gorkys hit .266 with 2 HR and 14 RBI in 38 games for Indianapolis this season. Hernandez, who came over from Atlanta in the McLouth trade, is the same type of player as Presley/Tabata/etc: speed, but no power. It’s surprising that the Pirates didn’t call up someone like Matt Hague to DH for this Interleague series.
